Jack Hargreaves, who introduced many to the countryside through his pioneering television countryside series 'Out of Town', sadly died in this year on the 15 March.
His programs fascinated me as a child, and no doubt influenced my future life and career.
He was often seen about in pony and trap, and once heard to comment the fields of Belchalwell seemed 'barren'. He probably had a point - intensive dairy agriculture has resulted in endless seas of Ryegrass with little or no other flora, though the compensations can be found in the rich and diverse chalk grasslands surrounding the vale.
His ashes spread on Bulbarrow Hill, as were those of his wife Isobel, who died on 5 February 1998.  Source: Local knowledge |
