Church Cottage Built
Year 1650
Thought to have been built c.1650, the village pub of Belchalwell was located on the right of Church Lane close to the junction with the main road through Belchalwell, now Church Walk Cottage. It was variously referred to as Church Cottage, 'The Ale House', 'The Beer House' and 'Mr Roses Beer House' at different times. Much of the structure is original, excepting the rear wall and a recent extension (1991). The building was extensively damaged by fire in 1852 when owned by Benjamin Rose (1861 Census), and later by George William Rose, his grandson, detailed on the same census. On the 1890 Ordnance Survey, there are the initials 'B.H.' next to the property - perhaps standing for 'Beer House'?Source: Various |
