Mains water comes to Belchalwell
Year 1926
In 1926 mains water reached Belchalwell. Prior to this, water pumped from the Lowbrook spring, just South of The Cross, fed stand pipes situated at the foot of Church Lane and on the open space opposite Lowbrook Farm Cottages. This water is now pumped electrically, mainly to feed cattle troughs on the down. In centuries past, water would have to have been drawn and carried from the Lowbrook spring, or the brook itself, though other closer springs, now lost to modern drainage systems, may also have been used, in particular the spring rising into a pond at Netherways, where some of the oldest pottery finds in the village have been made - presumably from water carrying vessels.Source: Various |
