Maps - 1840 Tithe Map of Belchalwell

Most Parishes were mapped and a Tithe Award and Map produced for each. A Tithe was the money paid to the Church (Rectors wages) by each person in the Parish for their Parish. It is a record of ownership and tenants of the land and tithes to be paid by each, and so rationalised an 'ad hock' method of 'payment in kind' or cash to wholly cash payments.

We have taken Belchalwell's Tithe Map and coloured it to show the different land use of the time and listed the owners and Tenants associated with each numbered plot of land. The actual amount of Tithe to be paid by each was worked out on 1/10th of the profit from each plot of land.

It's interesting to see how Belchalwell Street was entirely surrounded by orchards, but these have now all but disappeared, though they are still shown on the 1890 Ordanance Survey map. If you look hard enough in the village, there are the odd few aging fruit trees in hedgerows and corners which could have been around at that time, or are possibly their offspring. Recently, a new private orchard has been planted in Belchalwell Street, a small replacement of those sacrificed to agriculture in the World Wars.

It is also noticeable how the land use has 'switched', with the arable mainly on the hill top and grazing in the vale now, whilst the exact reverse was true then.

The current road which joins Lower Belchalwell to Belchalwell Street was not the major route through the village at the time of the Tithe Map. Dark Lane linked Belchalwell to Okeford Fizpaine. This can be seen clearly on the map, and ran from just south of the Church running south-east and is for at least part of its length still visible on the ground. A public footpath closely follows it's line, and the associated Netherway, another 'lost lane'.
